The base technology for the fax machine began the technology began in the early 1840s when Alexander Bain, a Scottish mechanic, had the idea to imprint the Morse code characters so the message would not depend on the understanding of the telegraph operator. He had already built intricate machines such as clocks so he started designing the concept that led to the modern fax machine.
Bain’s invention was called a chemical telegraph. It by passing the telegraph wire through special paper that was treated with chemicals. The signal made the chemical evaporate when it went through an area and this created the long and short symbols of the Morse code. The made sending a telegraph much faster than the telegraph operator having to transcribe the code as he heard it. Bain’s method produced tapes with the holes punched in them according to the message that was received by code.
Fax machines create an exact replica of a document through an electromechanical means. The image of the document that is being replicated is made with a pattern of dots on a graph, and they are either turned on or off. The ones that are turned on show up and the ones that are off do not. The final image is an exact copy of the first one.
The fax machine technology really took off in the 1980s worldwide. The French established certain specifications that had to be met by fax machines. Fax machines were made and sold by the tens of millions. They are still common in practically every business around the world. Even the very high tech companies in the west still use ordinary fax machines. However, there have been many advances since the first ones became popular. They have been converted to used regular paper instead of the very expensive thermal paper that was required for the first ones. They also changed the way they put out the print from thermal to ink jet technology.
Presently, fax machines are especially popular in Africa and Asia because the phone connection is more readily available than internet connections. Because there are still so many fax machines in the world, even businesses that use modern technology such as internet faxing and other digital communication still rely on fax machines. The fax technology is an important marketing tool for many businesses and will not be disappearing in the near future.
